THE DARK KNIGHT (PG-13) -

AMC Palace 10, AMC Palace 12, AMC Palace 16, AMC Palace 20, Canal Place, Grand, Holiday 12, Hollywood 9, Hollywood 14
HANCOCK (PG-13) -
Peter Berg’s twisty superhero flick stars Will Smith in the story of an alcoholic street bum with the powers of Superman. The picture provides a steady stream of laughs without ever descending into camp. It is flawed with a lot of the nonsense attending superheroes: Why concentrate on bank robbers when the same power could be used to dispatch Osama bin Laden? But this film isn’t predictable the way those in the genre almost always are. And it offers fine performances by Smith and Jason Bateman and Charlize Theron, who play the superhero’s friends. (Barton) AMC Palace 10, AMC Palace 12, AMC Palace 16, AMC Palace 20, Grand, Holiday 12, Hollywood 14

PINEAPPLE EXPRESS (R) -
Part-time New Orleans auteur David Gordon Green directs Seth Rogen and James Franco in Judd Apatow's stoner/crime/comedy production. Several of these things are not like the others. AMC Palace 10, AMC Palace 12, AMC Palace 16, AMC Palace 20, Grand, Holiday 12, Hollywood 9, Hollywood 14
SISTERHOOD OF THE TRAVELING PANTS 2 (PG-13) -

STEP BROTHERS (R) -

Swing Vote (PG-13) -
Kevin Costner stars in Joshua Michael Stern's comedy as a New Mexico good ole boy whose ballot, delayed by a malfunctioning voting machine, will determine the next president of the United States. Costner's warm relationship with Madeline Carroll as his daughter provides the required heart. The plotting is convenient and thin, but the laughs are satisfyingly plentiful. Oddly, despite a rousing end, the picture is sneakily cynical about the difference our elections actually make. That's an unfortunate weakness. (Barton) AMC Palace 10, AMC Palace 12, AMC Palace 20, Grand, Hollywood 14
TROPIC THUNDER (R) -
Ben Stiller’s send-up of Hollywood megalomania, insincerity, insecurity, disloyalty, sycophancy and greed is framed in the making of a Vietnam action flick in which Stiller, Robert Downey Jr. and Jack Black are to star. Although Downey contributes a brilliant comic performance, the picture is only intermittently funny, its only truly hilarious moments delivered by Tom Cruise’s lewd and venomous rants as the film-within-the-film’s arrogant producer. (Barton) (Reviewed in this issue.) AMC Palace 10, AMC Palace 12, AMC Palace 16, AMC Palace 20, Grand, Holiday 12, Hollywood 9, Hollywood 14, Prytania
